The Tumescent Technique

The Tumescent Technique and VASER® Lipo System

Tumescent means to become swollen. Tumescent liposuction involves the use of a diluted solution made up of epinephrine and lidocaine. This solution is injected into the fat underneath the skin, causing the area to swell and firm up. (*The surgeon then uses a small surgical instrument to suction away the excess fatty deposits).

History

The Tumescent Technique was developed in 1985 by Dr. Jeffrey A. Klien, M.D., a dermatologist from California. Prior to 1985, liposuction was quite a bit more risky, often causing so much blood loss that patients frequently required a blood transfusion. Vasoconstriction, resulting from the dilute epinephrine used in the Tumescent Technique, has virtually eliminated blood loss during the liposuction procedure. This method is now considered the safest, most effective form of liposuction.

Benefits

Tumescent liposuction can significantly reduce some of the common side effects of older procedures. The epinephrine/lidocaine solution temporarily reduces the size of the capillaries, which results in significantly less blood loss. The majority of patients only lose about 15-30 ml of blood. It also helps reduce pain, bruising, and swelling post-surgery.

Risks

As with any surgery, there are risks associated with the tumescent technique; although the risks are minimal. If the amount of lidocaine in the solution is too high, a patient could get lidocaine toxicity. There is also a risk of fluid accumulation if too much solution is injected. These are risks a prospective candidate should discuss with his/her doctor prior to surgery.

Ideal Candidate

This surgery is not meant as a substitute for weight loss. The ideal candidate should have already achieved an ideal body weight and have elastic and firm skin. The procedure is most effective on a few problem areas which are difficult to eliminate with diet and exercise alone.

Dr. Klien’s discovery has significantly reduced the risks associated with liposuction. The Tumescent Technique has eliminated the need for blood transfusions common in older forms of liposuction procedures. In addition, these surgeries do not require hospitalization and general anesthesia is not used. Patients now recover faster, experience less pain, and receive optimal cosmetic results. The Tumescent Technique is the safest liposuction technique available, and has now become the world-wide standard of care.

VASER® Lipo System

By combining the Tumescent Technique with the VASER® Lipo System, patients can anticipate fast, consistent results and a quick recovery. This system is the only one available with the ability to differentiate between the targeted fat and the surrounding tissue, which means the surgeon can safely break up the unwanted fat while preserving the connective tissue, nerves, and blood vessels.

VASER® stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance. It was designed by Sound Surgical Technologies, LLC and received FDA clearance for body contouring in 2002. Although fairly new, this procedure is comparatively safe with thousands performed worldwide without serious complications.

How It Works

First, the tumescent fluid is injected into the fatty tissue around the area to be suctioned. The VASER® system then uses ultrasonic waves to cause the fat cells to break apart and emulsify. This allows for easy removal of the fat using either a cannula or a massage.

Areas That Can Be Treated

This technique can be used anywhere where there are small pockets of extra fat. The most common areas include: abdominals, thighs, knees, buttocks, arms, love handles, breasts, hips, back, neck and chin.

Amount of Fat That Can Be Removed

It is important to remember that liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss. The amount of fat that can typically be removed is equivalent to the amount of loose hanging fat you could grab on your belly if you stood up and bent forward. Some fat in the area is left untreated, so with significant weight gain this remaining fat will expand. It is important to maintain healthy eating and exercise habits in order to retain optimal results.

Results

As with all cosmetic surgeries, results will vary per patient. Most patients start to see results immediately; however, final results may not be seen for up to 6 months. Results vary depending on the amount of fat removed and the number of sites treated.

Ideal Candidate

Again, this is not a substitute for weight loss. The ideal candidate is at a healthy weight seeking to treat stubborn areas difficult to lose with diet and exercise alone.

What is Smart Lipo All About?

Smart lipo is a very new treatment option that was introduced to the public in 2007 and is an approved FDA procedure. Many people believe that this is one of the safest treatment options as well as provides the best results for patients that undergo its treatment. It varies from a regular liposuction surgery in several different ways. The biggest way is the fact that it uses a high-intensity laser in order to melt and liquefy the fatty tissues within the body. This makes it very easy for doctors to be able to sculpt and shape the body the way the patient desires with minimal discomfort for the patient. Before the patient gets started it will undergo tumescent liposuction which is the process of receiving fluids specifically in the areas that you are looking to have treated and provides anesthetics to the specific areas being treated as well as helps to decrease any bleeding drastically. This makes it much faster for the patient to recover after treatment as well as helps to reduce any type of pain or discomfort they may feel.

There is another treatment that is quite popular and is also considered to be an alternative to liposuction. This is called Vaser lipo and uses yet another technique that is designed to break up and destroy the fat cells or fatty tissues inside of the body. This only targets the specific areas that the patient is having treated and is designed in a way that it does not affect other areas of the body such as the nerves and blood vessels. Some patients experience bruising on their skin from the use of the ultrasound equipment, but it does not destroy the skin in any way. This is also an FDA approved treatment and has been around since 2002 and has had thousands of procedures conducted with a very high safety track record.

Liposuction – What You Should Know

Liposuction is a popular surgery these days, and it can be very beneficial to men and women with fat deposits. If you’ve been thinking about liposuction, here’s you should know about this procedure.

What Is Liposuction?

If you sort of know what liposuction is but don’t quite fully understand, you aren’t alone. Liposuction is a surgical procedure that will remove fat cells using specialized suction equipment. It was first done back in 1974 and since then the surgery has seen significant improvements.

Who Should Consider It?

If you are thinking about liposuction you need to be realistic about what it can do for you. There’s no question that some people see dramatic results, not everyone does, and sometimes it’s not immediate. The success of the treatment depends on your skin’s elasticity, you weight, age, and overall health. Liposuction isn’t for anyone with a weak immune system, heart disease, or diabetes.

You are a good candidate if your weight is normal and your skin’s elasticity is good, but you have trouble areas such as the thighs, butt, or tummy. Ask lots of questions from your surgeon, and even ask to see before and after pictures of patients who have had liposuction done.

Types Of Liposuction

Most people don’t realize that there is more than one type of liposuction procedure. All use a cannula wand to remove the unwanted fat. Ultrasonic assisted liposuction also called UAL, uses sound waves to liquefy the fat before removing it. LipoSelection uses the same concept but it doesn’t disturb the tissue. Tumescent liposuction has large quantities of anesthetic injected into the area being treated. Power assisted liposuction, called PAL, uses a motor powered cannula, which lets your surgeon use smaller movements, which are a lot more comfortable.

Risks And Benefits

Every surgery has its risks, liposuction complications are actually quite rare. They might include nerve damage, infection, negative reactions to anesthesia, and seizures, Your risks will be minimized with a proper pre-surgery examination. Adverse side effects can include bruising and scarring. The benefits needs to be balanced with the risks.

Cost

How much your procedure will cost depends on where you live, who your surgeon is, and the type of liposuction procedure. Treatments can range from $1500 to $8000 for your total cost. It is rarely covered by insurance, but many surgeons do offer financial plans.

Choosing A Liposuction Surgeon

You should take some time choosing a liposuction surgeon to make sure you get the best in your area. Start by learning about the different surgeons in your area. Set up a consult appointment with at least 2 surgeons. Ask lots of questions, ask to see before and after photos of the surgeon’s work, and find out just how many liposuction surgeons he/she has done. The success of your surgery and your health really do lie in the hands of a qualified surgeon.

So in conclusion, these are just some of the things you should know about liposuction. Like with any procedure it pays to do your own research and to find out all you can about your various options so that you can make a more informed decision.

Different Types of Liposuction

1. In the traditional form of liposuction, the patient is put under general anesthesia after which small incisions are made in the area to be treated. Then, a small suctioning tube is used to remove fat. Though this is an effective procedure, latest procedures have less pain, bruising and recovery time after surgery.

2. Special injections of anesthetic are used before removing fats in tumescent liposuction. This way, patients don’t go to sleep during surgery, to reduce recovery time. The epinephrine in the injections also makes fat swell, so that it is easier to remove. The epinephrine also shrinks blood vessels, which leads to less bleeding. A cannula is then used to suction out fat from the body.

3. Tumescent injections are also used in ultrasonic liposuction to make it easy to remove fats. However the cannula used here to remove fat emits ultrasonic waves or sound waves, so that the fat it comes in contact with is liquefied. The advantage of this procedure is that as more fat can be removed as stubborn fat deposits are easily removed.

4. In laser liposuction, a low energy laser is used instead of ultrasonic waves to emulsify fats for its easier removal.

5. There are many other different types of liposuction out there, but the often fall under or are similar to the liposuction procedures listed above. For example, VASER liposuction is an ultrasound liposuction.

With these different procedures having its own pros and cons, like any medical procedure, choose an accredited surgeon with the maximum experience in the procedure you are interested in.
