It is often said that where America leads, Britain follows. As with many things, this is also true with cosmetic surgery. Since the invention of liposuction in Italy in the early 1970s and its refinement by American doctors in the 1980s, the procedure of permanently removing fat deposits using high-pressured vacuum has been gaining popularity ever since.
Procedures such as Vaser Lipo are now one of the most popular cosmetic surgical enhancements in the United States, with hundreds of thousands of Americans going under the knife every year. Although liposuction has not enjoyed the same levels of popularity in the UK, more Britons than ever are opting for liposuction. Going under the knife is seen by many as a short-cut to losing weight and, with the refinement of ever safer techniques such as Vaser Lipo, they are having ever larger amounts of fat removed when they do so. The British still have some way to catch up with the levels of obesity present in the United States, but obesity rates are steadily rising in the UK, undoubtedly increasing the popularity of the “quick fix” solution promised by liposuction and the allure of a procedure such as Vaser Lipo which promises to eliminate unwanted and persistent pockets of fat.
Figures released by the UK’s largest cosmetic surgery group show that they carried out liposuction on over two thousand patients in 2009, nearly double the number of operations performed in the preceding year. Considering that only around five hundred liposuction operations were carried out in 2000, it can be seen that the procedure is steadily gaining in popularity. It is incredible to think that the two thousand litres of body fat removed in 2009 are the equivalent of what a typical British chip shop uses in a year to fry its fish and chips!
Although the number of men opting for liposuction is increasing, it is still mostly seen as a “woman’s operation”, with nearly ninety per cent of patients being female and with modern techniques such as Vaser Lipo becoming more common. In the UK, patients are most likely to come from Yorkshire, the North West and North East, with only three per cent coming from the South East. This can probably be explained by the fact that obesity is higher in these areas. The amount of fat being removed from liposuction per patient is also rising. As a nation, the British are becoming heavier whilst at the same time they are more body conscious than ever before.
However, liposuction procedures such as Vaser Lipo are not only being used to reduce flabby stomachs, hips and thighs; it has also become a tool to enhance almost perfect bodies and make them designer perfect. The idea of liposuction to eliminate the minor imperfections in an otherwise perfect body has been dubbed precision liposuction. This term carries the inherent suggestion that anyone can have liposuction surgery such as Vaser Lipo to enhance their body, even those who are already in excellent shape. Precision liposuction is a fast growing trend in America and, with the UK set to follow America’s lead, this is one trend that is bound to carry on increasing in popularity on both sides of the Atlantic.
